The Knowhere level is set in the Collector's vault of cosmic treasures, and features a multi-stage battle involving the Collector, Hela, Wong, and Fenris. The encounter spans across multiple platforms, requiring lighting to hold up from multiple points of view.
I was responsible for lighting and tuning atmospheric settings, and ensuring the lighting aligned with story and gameplay direction. I collaborated closely with concept artists, designers, fx, and environment teams to maintain story and visual clarity through lighting.
Lighting was authored using Unreal Engine’s pathtracing mode and captured into projections for in-game use. I collaborated with tech art to troubleshoot projections and ensure lighting was captured accurately. Knowhere required a unique approach to lighting the platform (which was lit by another artist in Maya), and the capture cubes (lit via shaders). I was responsible for the atmosphere and lighting of the room itself, establishing the mood and tying all the elements together visually.
