Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War | Echoes of a Cold War - Server Building

The server building featured in the "Echoes of a Cold War" level in Black Ops: Cold War. This building is the level's finale, where players have to journey down to the bottom of the building, attach the server to a waiting helicopter, and ride it away to safety. The building was very symmetrical and square, so I used the sun angle to help orient players as to which side of the building they were on. Some player pathways were lit with the sun, and others were lit using work lights.

I was responsible for lighting, reflection probe setup, tuning atmospheric and exposure settings, and conveying the mood/story of the level. I communicated with concept, design, and environment teams to ensure the gameplay and narrative were being supported by lighting. I coordinated with the FX team to make sure exposure settings and atmospherics were supporting effects, and worked with tech art to help optimize the level while still reaching our visual target.

I used light from the sun (as well as further faked sunlight) to help light one side of the building and create a visual way to anchor the different player paths.
